Find out why Michelin and Audi have been collaborating on on-road endurance racing since 2000.
With our partner Audi, we work every year to develop the best car for Le Mans 24 hours, pushing tyres to their limits.
When we talked about super sport cars, we immediately think about high speed. The speed has three effects on driving: it decreases the stability of the car, increases shock impacts and generates tyre distortion. Therefore grip, comfort and safety are drastically reduced. That is exactly where Michelin and Audi partnership has led to great improvement over the passenger car category.
All the technologies developed through this successful partnership are then directly transferred to our road tyres.
One crucial factor that can make you win or lose an endurance race is the number of pit stops that is to say the number of time you have to go back to the stands to change your set of tyres for example. Reducing the number of stops is thus a critical issue. In 2013, it was one of the success factor of Audi against Toyota at the 24 hours of Le Mans. We have been able to reduced tyre usage by 20% over the last 2 years.
For you, this means every high performance Michelin tyres like Latitude Sport, Pilot Sport or Primacy ranges have seen their durability multiplied by two.
In our approach to show the real potential of our expertise in high performance tyres, we work closely with renowned tuners such as MTM or APR. Tuning is not about disrupting the balance of performance. It is about increasing and optimizing them, keeping these performances accessible to the casual driver. Thus, the tuner must adapt the axles, the brakes and the tyres to the mechanics and the transmission fitted. Here we come with our high performance tyres and specially the Pilot Sport range providing the best road holding for high performance cars.
The Audi MTM R8 V10 Biturbo is an Audi R8 converted to rear-wheel drive (full front-wheel drive has been abandoned). This radical change in transmission requires huge engine preparation. With a compressor, the V8 has a total power 766 horsepower with a predicted top speed of over 360 km/h.
Audi and Michelin partnership is unique. Not only because of the numerous victories we won together but due to the constant desire of innovation that leads us toward successes. In 2006, the Audi-Michelin team became the first to win an on-road endurance race with a diesel car. In 2012, we became the first to win the Le Mans 24 Hours with a hybrid prototype fitted with a new street soft conventionally sized tyre.
